Left-hander Scott Eyre agreed to a $2.45 million, two-year contract with the Giants on Friday.
Eyre, 31, has gone 2-1 with one save and a 3.03 ERA in 95 relief appearances
since being awarded to San Francisco on waivers from Toronto on Aug. 8, 2002.
The Giants also agreed to a one-year contract with left-handed reliever Chad Zerbe.
• Alex Rodriguez's agent blamed the Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers for
not completing a trade of Rodriguez to Boston.
Scott Boras said he would leave New York today and return to his home in California.
"We worked very hard on this deal," Boras said. "Alex has done
everything he can to show his good faith by committing $13 million. The two
sides were $20 million apart. You would think mutual concessions by both teams
would allow this deal to happen."
Red Sox President Larry Lucchino, who said Thursday that the proposed trade
of outfielder Manny Ramirez for A-Rod had collapsed, said his team had stopped
its efforts to acquire the shortstop.
"There really is nothing going on that I'm aware of. None of us have had
any conversations with Texas," Lucchino said. "I'm on my way to visit
family and hope to put this behind me."
• Outfielder Jose Guillen completed a $6 million, two-year contract with
Anaheim. Guillen split last season with Cincinnati and the A's.
• Right-hander Kevin Millwood accepted Philadelphia's offer of arbitration,
ensuring he will be in the Phillies' rotation next season.
• Outfielder Carlos Lee agreed to a $15 million, two-year contract with
the Chicago White Sox, who also agreed to a one-year deal with pitcher Kelly
Wunsch.
• The New York Yankees said they will not offer arbitration to outfielders
Karim Garcia and David Dellucci, making them free agents. The Yankees agreed
to a one-year contract with infielder Miguel Cairo, and left-hander Gabe White
accepted arbitration.
• The Montreal Expos will not offer a contract to right-hander Orlando
Hernandez, making him a free agent. Hernandez did not pitch last season because
of an injured right shoulder.
• Right-handed reliever Antonio Alfonseca, who pitched for the Chicago
Cubs last season, agreed to a one-year contract with the Atlanta Braves.
• Second baseman Alex Cora agreed to a $1.3 million, one-year contract
with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
• The Cincinnati Reds agreed to one-year contracts with catcher Jason
LaRue and infielder D'Angelo Jimenez.
• Infielder Wes Helms agreed to a $4.5 million, two-year deal with the
Milwaukee Brewers.
Outfielder John Vander Wal declined Milwaukee's offer of salary arbitration.
The Brewers have until Jan. 8 to re-sign him.
• The Cubs agreed to one-year deals with infielder Ramon Martinez and
catcher Paul Bako.
