Catcher Rod Barajas became a free agent after the Arizona Diamondbacks declined to offer him a contract Saturday.
Barajas, who worked his way through the Diamondbacks' minor league system, hit .218 in 220 at-bats with Arizona last season. He spent much of the season sharing the starting duties with Chad Moeller but handled the biggest share of the load down the stretch.
Arizona signed
free agent Brent Mayne during the offseason to bolster the position.
Left-hander Valerio De Los Santos and third baseman Travis Chapman became free agents Saturday when they weren't offered contracts by the Philadelphia Phillies.
De Los Santos, 32, was traded to the Phillies by Milwaukee in September. He was 4-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 51 games with both teams last season.
Chapman, 26, spent most of last season with Triple-A Scranton, where he had 82 RBIs. He appeared in one game with the Phillies, going 0-for-1 against Atlanta.
In less than nine months, righthander Danys Baez has gone from a prestigious job to the unemployment line.
The Cleveland Indians declined to tender contracts to Baez and lefthander Carl Sadler on Saturday, allowing them to become free agents.
After opening the
2003 campaign as the Indians' closer, Baez lost the job late in the season.
Cleveland declined to exercise the $5 million option on Baez's contract after
the season and sent him to Class AAA Buffalo before purchasing his contract
a week later.
