While viewing Francisco Cordero as their closer of the future, the Texas Rangers saw no future with Jason Tyner.
The Rangers on Saturday tendered a contract to Cordero while electing not to do the same with Tyner, making him a free agent.
Following the trade
of Ugueth Urbina in July, Texas turned to Cordero as their closer. The righthander
converted 13-of-17 opportunities and finished the season with a 5-8 record,
15 saves and a 2.94 ERA in 73 appearances.
In 191 career games with Detroit and the Rangers, the 28-year-old Cordero is
10-13 with 25 saves and a 3.57 ERA.
Tyner's tenure with Texas lasted just 13 days, as the outfielder was claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay on December 8. He appeared in 46 games with the Devil Rays in 2003, batting .278 with six RBI.
Drafted 21st overall by the New York Mets in 1998, the 26-year-old Tyner owns a .257 career average with 49 RBI and 47 stolen bases in 245 games with the Mets and Tampa Bay.
Royals right-hander Kris Wilson became a free agent Saturday when he was not offered a contract by Kansas City before the league's deadline for teams to tender contracts.
Team officials said the Royals needed the roster spots and decided it would be in their best interest to offer Wilson a minor league contract to keep the 27-year-old in the organization. Assistant general manager Muzzy Jackson expected the team would ``get something done shortly.''
The Royals extended contract offers Friday to everyone else on their major league roster.
Wilson made $311,000 last season when he was 6-3 with a 5.33 ERA in 29 games as a long reliever and spot starter. He is 14-9 with a 5.32 ERA in 90 games over the last four seasons.
