The Montreal Expos traded utility player Jose Macias to the Chicago Cubs on Friday for right-hander Wilton Chavez.

Chavez went 11-7 with a 4.14 earned run average in 28 appearances, including 23 starts, with triple-A Iowa and double-A West Tennessee last season. The 25-year-old, who made all but two of his appearances at Iowa, had 128 strikeouts and only 52 walks.

The Expos assigned Chavez to triple-A Edmonton.

Macias, 29, hit .239 with four home runs and 22 runs batted-in over 111 games last year. He played six different positions, including designated hitter, in 2003.

The Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday agreed to terms with pitcher Joe Beimel on a one-year contract, avoiding arbitration.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Beimel has spent his entire career in Pittsburgh after being selected in the 18th round of the 1998 June draft. He went 1-3 and a 5.05 ERA last year while making a career-high 69 appearances.

The 26-year-old lefthander led the Pirates in appearances and recorded a 2.57 ERA in 31 games at PNC Park. He is 10-19 with a 5.00 ERA in his career.
