Outfielder Adam Piatt was among five players who agreed Friday to minor league contracts with the Cleveland Indians.
Piatt, 27, split last season between Oakland and Tampa Bay, hitting a combined .227 with six homers and 18 RBI in 61 games.
If Piatt is added
to the major league roster, he would get a split contract for $385,000 in the
majors, $100,000 in the minors.
Piatt was invited to spring training along with the others: right-hander Giovanni
Carrara, lefties Mike Porzio and Tim Young, and outfielder Ernie Young.
Ernie Young, 34, spent most of the last season at Triple-A Toledo, where he hit .264 with 21 home runs in 128 games. He went 2-for-11 as a designated hitter in five games for Detroit in June.
If he is added to the major league roster, he would get a one-year contract calling for $350,000 if he is in the majors, $84,000 if he's in the minors.
Porzio, 31, spent most of the 2003 season at Triple-A Charlotte, where he went 8-6 with a 4.24 ERA in 26 appearances. If he's added to the roster, he also would get a split contract, one calling for $350,000 in the majors, $120,000 in the minors.
Carrara, 35, opened the season in the Seattle bullpen and went 2-0 with a 6.83 ERA in 23 relief appearances. He was sent June 19 to Triple-A Tacoma, where he went 1-1 with a 4.23 ERA in 27 2-3 innings pitched.
Tim Young, 30, split 2003 between Triple-A Syracuse and Colorado Springs, going 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA in 29 appearances for Colorado Springs.
